The mission of Alaska Youth Choir (AYC), in existence since 1994, is to develop, nurture, and encourage a life-long learning, enjoyment, and love of music through choral singing for all youth ages 6 and up in the community of Juneau, Alaska. Choristers are selected by audition for the preparatory, intermediate, or advanced levels. AYC has ongoing recruitment efforts for new choristers throughout the school year.
Choristers pay tuition to participate, and need-based scholarships are available from the Henri I & Grace T Akiyama Alaska Youth Choir Scholarship program. Choristers rehearse in the evening with the Director and an accompanist at least once each week during the school year, and perform at AYC concerts and other community events. AYC frequently collaborates with other arts groups in Juneau, including high school, middle school and adult choirs, including the Juneau Bach Society, and most recently the King Island Christmas production.
Recent performances include the September dedication of the new Bishop Kenny Peace Park, and the November Veterans Day public ceremony presented by Taku Post 5559 Veterans of Foreign Wars. AYC has opened every session of the State Legislature for at least the last ten years by performing the Alaska Flag Song on the floors of both the House and the Senate, and performs at a community-wide holiday celebration at the Governor’s Mansion every December.
For instructional purposes choristers are divided into beginning, intermediate, and advanced choirs. Goals of the advanced choir are to participate in local, national, and international choral festivals to broaden musical education, experience, and perspective and to promote the cultural image of Alaska when performing at national and international choral events by performing music arranged and composed by Alaskans.
